Quantum confinement and negative heat capacity

Thermodynamics dictates that the specific heat of a system is strictly non-negative. However, in finite classical systems there are well-known theoretical and experimental cases where this rule is violated, in particular finite atomic clusters. Here, we show for the first time that negative heat capacity can also occur in finite quantum systems. The physical scenario on which this effect might ...

Negative heat capacity for a cluster of 147 sodium atoms.

There exists a surprising theoretical prediction for a small system: its microcanonical heat capacity can become negative. An increase of energy can-under certain conditions-lead to a lower temperature. Here we present experimental evidence that a cluster containing exactly 147 sodium atoms does indeed have a negative microcanonical heat capacity near its solid to liquid transition.

Tsallis power laws and finite baths with negative heat capacity.

It is often stated that heat baths with finite degrees of freedom i.e., finite baths, are sources of Tsallis distributions for classical Hamiltonian systems. By using well-known fundamental statistical mechanics expressions, we rigorously show that Tsallis distributions with fat tails are possible only for finite baths with constant negative heat capacity, while constant positive heat capacity ...

Negative heat capacity and non-extensive kinetic theory

The negative nature of the heat capacity CV of thermodynamically isolated self-gravitating systems is rediscussed in the framework of a non-extensive kinetic theory. It is found that the dependence of CV on the non-extensive parameter q gives rise to a negative branch with the critical value corresponding to q = 5/3 (CV → −∞).

Heat Transfer Fluids

The choice of heat transfer fluids has significant effects on the performance, cost and reliability of solar thermal systems. In this chapter, we evaluate existing heat transfer fluids such as oils and molten salts based on a new figure of merit capturing the combined effects of thermal storage capacity, convective heat transfer characteristics and hydraulic performance of the fluids. Thermal s...
